Hartford History Center, Hartford Public Library, 500 Main Street, Hartford.  “A Conversation with Butch Lewis: The Black Panther Party in Connecticut.”  A discussion recalling the Black Panther Party in Connecticut during the turbulent 1960’s and 1970’s, featuring Butch Lewis, 1960’s activist and co-founder of the Hartford Chapter of the Black Panther Party, and Dr. Stacey Close, Associate Vice President for Equity and Diversity at Eastern Connecticut State University. Free.

Tuesday, February 25, 2014, 12 – 1 p.m. 

Conversations at Connecticut’s Old State House. Contributing author Dr. Stacey Close, Professor of History at Eastern Connecticut State University, will speak about 20th-century civil rights struggles in Hartford; followed by a panel discussion. Free; bring a bag lunch. Ctosh.org

The New Haven Museum, 114 Whitney Ave., New Haven. Co-sponsored by The Amistad Committee, Inc. Contributing authors Dr. Stacey Close, Professor of History at Eastern Connecticut State University, and Dr. Frank Mitchell, curator for The Amistad Center for Art & Culture, with editor Elizabeth Normen, publisher of Connecticut Explored, will talk about how the book came to be and major themes explored in its essays with a special focus on women’s history in honor of Women’s History Month. Editor Elizabeth Normen will discuss the long arc of the African American experience in Connecticut illustrated by four compelling stories drawn from the book’s 54 essays. Acton Public Library, Old Saybrook, sponsored by the Old Saybrook Historical Society. Contributing essayist Liz Petry and editor Elizabeth Normen will talk about best-selling novelist Ann Petry, resident of Old Saybrook, and her aunt, Anna Louise James, an early female pharmacist and long time business owner of the James Pharmacy in Old Saybrook. Connecticut State Library, 231 Capitol Ave., Hartford. Mark H. Jones, recently retired state archivist and contributing essayist, will speak on Mary Townsend Seymour, activist and one of the founders of Hartford’s NAACP chapter.
